Yellow Candle Project

Yellow Candle Project is a practical and informal educational tool to remember those murdered during the Holocaust. The candle will be lit on the eve of Yom Hashoah which this year will be the evening of 1st May 2019.

Every candle comes in a bag with a small card that carries the name of someone who perished in the Shoah, many of them children. People are encouraged to take a photograph of the candle lighting with the name they are lighting it for and post it on social media using the hashtag #yellowcandle. It was incredibly successful in 2018 where it was trending 4th on twitter on the night and engaged people across the Community including celebrities and other public figures.

This will be the third year of the initiative, which in year one saw 3,000 candles distributed and last year, 13,000. The project was managed by volunteers who raised the funds to distribute teh candles free of any cost. This year with Maccabi GB now handling the supply chain and distrbution we have 25,000 candles to distribute.

This is a cross communal project which in 2018 saw over 60 organisations including synagogue bodies, schools, shops and communal organisations, as well as individuals, come together and remember as one Community. Orgnaisations are invited to reserve their Yellow Candles via a website which allows them to order for their members.

The Yellow Candle Project also gives families the opportunity to speak about the Holocaust for perhaps the first time and raise awareness of what can happen if antisemitism goes unchallenged.
