Jewish Deaf Association

An independent national charity since 1951, JDA provides high quality, professional support for everyone with hearing loss.  By informing, supporting and educating, we aim to improve access, equality, independence and inclusion for people with hearing loss, breaking down the barriers between deaf and hearing people.  We serve people of all faiths and none, all methods of communication, all ages and at every stage of life.

The need and how we respond

800,000+ people in the UK are severely or profoundly deaf.  Based in our purpose-built, Deaf-friendly centre where all are welcomed in a friendly, supportive environment, JDA is at the heart of the Deaf community.

Our work begins when shocked families face the devastating diagnosis that their newborn baby is deaf.  We provide parents with the practical and emotional support, information and guidance to help them make the right decisions for their child regarding everything from benefits to schooling to cochlear implants.

We provide the invaluable information and support services people who are losing their hearing need to adapt to the traumatic changes they experience and retain their independence.

Our most vulnerable clients, multiply disadvantaged older Deaf/Deafblind sign language users, can barely communicate with hearing people, are unable to cope with everyday life and excluded from mainstream services.  Some have dementia and are particularly vulnerable to abuse, cruelty and neglect. Many turn to JDA as their sole source of support.  Our dedicated staff and volunteers provide support, information, guidance, and advocacy so that they are safe, secure, supported and loved, right until their very end of life.
